Have you ever been in love with someone who views themselves completely differently from the way you view them? Where you see strength and beauty, they see weakness and ugliness?
Meanwhile, they look at themselves with such disgust it breaks your heart. There were months where I would avoid mirrors, and baggy clothing was my biggest source of comfort. My best friend had a baby a few months ago, and she told me that her husband pointed out her stretch marks and asked if they were ever going to go away.
I was a very chubby kid growing up; I have stretch marks on my hips, thighs, and breasts.
I worked hard to lose weight, and my stretch marks are a of the work I put in. I want to be heard and acknowledged — not dismissed. Just be there for me.
Instead, listen and say, how can I help you? Whenever my partner asks me how he can help me, I ask him to hold me able. For example, hold me able for drinking a certain amount of water per day. Hold me able to not snack at midnight. Hold me able for pushing myself at the gym; well, you get the point. Sometimes an ability partner makes the biggest difference. Something that always helps me is when my partner reminds me of where I started.
I used to be a cardio kind of girl, working out for over two hours on the treadmill. My body drastically changed over time, and my weight constantly fluctuates. You should always encourage your partner to look at their body as a tool, Body image issues and dating just a product that looks good.
A few weeks ago, I went on a mile hike. The following day I hit the gym for a quick workout. I felt amazing — my body did that. This should be quite obvious, but I once dated someone who agreed that I looked terrible in a bikini. However, then I start to question myself. What if he actually means it? I wonder to myself. We are our own worst critics, after all. When I was single, I learned how to love myself and my body truly. I focused on myself, work, making money, and I only did what made me happy. After I moved to Los Angeles, I quit a job, lost another, tried to find one, dropped out of school, stopped paying attention to what I was eating — lost myself in the process of it all.
The stress took over my life like nothing else. I stopped looking at myself in a positive light — instead, all I saw was a failure.
My partner was with me through it all, and one thing he never failed to do was make me feel good about myself. Every morning there would be a sticky note on the bathroom mirror reminding me I was beautiful. When I would go to the gym, he would have an exercise program ready for me. He encouraged healthy eating and supported me through it all. Loving someone with body image issues is hard, and it goes both ways. Everybody struggles with insecurities, even the most confident of people.
